Announcing San Luis Obispo Little Theatre’s DIRECTOR SEARCH for 2012-2013!
Interested in directing a play or musical for San Luis Obispo Little Theatre’s 2012-2013 season? Here’s how to propose your project:
- Look at the list of plays that the Artistic Advisory Committee is considering for the 2012-2013 season (see sidebar to your left!) These plays represent the appropriate mix of comedy, drama, mystery, and musical selections that the Little Theatre would like to find for our next season. If you are interested in directing any of the titles on the list, great! If you would like to propose another title to the Artistic Advisory Committee, that’s fine, too! All Director proposals will be considered equally.
- Once you decide on a play (or plays) to propose, fill out the appropriate Director Application (click on the links below to download them!) Each director may submit up to TWO titles. There are two versions of the Director Application: one for Directors who have previously directed at the Little Theatre, and one for first-time Directors. Directors must fill out a separate packet for each play proposed. Please note:
Ø All applications must be filled out completely in order to be considered for the 2012-2013 season.
Ø If the applicant has not previously directed a show at the Little Theatre, they must complete the application for first-time directors (even if they have directing experience at other organizations.)
- Submit your completed application to the Little Theatre (mail, email, or drop it off at the Box Office during regular office hours.) Please contact Kevin Harris at kevinharris@slolittletheatre.org is you have any questions while filling out your application. All directors who submit a completed application (or applications) before the deadline will be interviewed by the Artistic Advisory Committee.
- After you turn in your application(s), a member of the Artistic Advisory Committee will contact you to schedule an interview.
- After the interviews, the Artistic Advisory Committee will put consider all of the proposals and create the 2011-2012 season. Additional interviews may be scheduled, if necessary.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Who is on the Artistic Advisory Committee?
The A.A.C. is made of John Battalino (Board member), Elaine Fournier (Board Member), Kerry DiMaggio (Academy of Creative Theatre Coordinator), and Kevin Harris (Managing Artistic Director.)
How are plays/directors selected?
The A.A.C. considers many factors when choosing the plays/directors for the Season. The suggested plays represent an appropriate mix of styles and genres that the Little Theatre strives to offer to our patrons in every Season. The major considerations of the Committee often are:
Ø Experience of the Director.
Ø Appropriateness of production for the organization and space.
Ø Thoroughness of Directing Application (is the Director’s vision clear and in line with the overall goals of the Little Theatre.)
Ø Cast Breakdown (can the show be cast given the local talent available? Does the play offer roles to men/women/children/age groups that balance the other plays being considered?)
Ø Cost of production.
Ø Marketability of production.
Ø Staff/Volunteer resources necessary to produce the proposed title.
How should I prepare for the interview?
During your director interview, be prepared to go into detail about your vision for the production. You should be able to answer the following questions:
Ø How will your production work in the theatre space?
Ø Why do you believe this production would appeal to our patrons/community at large?
Ø Why do you want to direct this play?
Ø What is your approach to Directing? (How do you plan on breaking down the rehearsal process? How do you stage a play? How do you plan on collaborating with your Artistic Team?)
Remember: there are no right or wrong answers to these questions. Every director/production is different. However, you should certainly put some thought into how you will approach the “nuts and bolts” of directing. As always, please feel free to contact Kevin Harris is you have any questions about preparing for the interview.
