Job Overview

 

The Technical Director (TD) under supervision from the Managing Artistic Director, has the daily responsibility for the technical operations of the theatre including lighting, sound, set design and construction, and coordinating necessary maintenance. Because a TD may be called upon to deal with a wide range of technical issues, he or she benefits from a working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theater, dance, and music productions and presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities  

 

·         Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at San Luis Obispo Little Theatre in advance of production dates.

·         Designs, sets up, and maintains lighting and sound systems for theater, dance, music, and other productions and projects; assists/supervises guest designers with technical matters.

·         Designs, supervises and assists with set and stage construction; assists/supervises guest designers with design process.

·         Design sets and/or lighting for SLOLT productions/event if experienced designers cannot be acquired.

·         Coordinates/supervises stage crews, technical operators, construction crews, strike crews, and appropriate volunteer production staff.

·         Orients SLOLT Production Teams and facility guests to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations; coordinates the use of the technical facilities by SLOLT Production Teams and others engaged by or using the facility.

·         Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and electrical equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs regular preventive maintenance on equipment.

·         Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets.

·         Maintains organized inventory (on-site and off-site) and orders specialized supplies. Coordinates all prop/costume/equipment rentals with other Arts organizations.

·         Supervises all purchasing for Production Teams.

 

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities  

 

  • Lead technical workshops quarterly for Volunteers.
  • Attends all production meetings for SLOLT events.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Talents, & Abilities

Communication: Keep Managing Artistic Director informed of all technical progress, issues and concerns within SLOLT. Demonstrated knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.   Ability to provide clear & useful information in a gracious, respectful, and helpful manner to the community, administrative and support staff, and volunteers, as well as donors and Board Members; in written form, via e-mail, and in person.

Personnel and Human Resources: Ability to work well with a diverse staff, clientele, and volunteer base.

Confidentiality: All matters pertaining to operations, volunteers, the public, and participants must remain confidential.  Human Resources consultant is to be included in discussions about staff or volunteers.

Leadership: Decision-making skills. Act as a model for staff, volunteers and the community.  Act in a professional manner at all times; demonstrate cooperation and constructive problem solving.  

Organization: Good time-management skills. Ability to work independently.

Coordination: Understand the relationship of all operational positions to each other, and their impact on the culture and meeting operational goals.  Adjust actions on relation to others’ actions, i.e., collaboration and team work.

Technical: Good understanding of computer principle and practice; working knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Outlook).

Essential Education and/or Experience

 

High School Diploma

2 years experience in Technical Theatre (Lighting/Scenic Design, Scenic Construction, Budgeting/Purchasing)

 

Preferred Education and/or Experience

 

Masters Degree in Scenic/Lighting Design or Technical Theatre

2 years experience in University/Professional Theatre as Designer or Technical Director
