2012-2013 DIRECTOR/PLAY SELECTION

THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF PLAYS CURRENTLY BEING CONSIDERED BY THE ARTISTIC ADVISORY COMMITTEE. You may submit applications on any of the following plays OR plays of your choosing.

Enchanted April- Matthew Barber (comedy): Four women rent a chateau on a remote Italian island to try to come to grips with their lives and relationships. They explore the differences in their personalities, reassess their goals, and reexamine their relationships in a sisterly fashion.

Incorruptible- Michael Frayn (comedy): A Dark Comedy About the Dark Ages.

Boy Get Girl- Rebecca Gilman (drama/thriller): Boy Gets Girl uses the story of what happens when a blind date turns into a living nightmare to examine stalking, sexism and the nature of the idea of romantic pursuit.

Miracle on 34th Street (holiday): When a nice old man who claims to be Santa Claus is institutionalized as insane, a young lawyer decides to defend him by arguing in court that he is the real thing.

It’s a Wonderful Life (holiday): An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like if he never existed.

The Sound of Music (musical): A woman leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to the children of a Naval officer widower.

Fatal Attraction- Bernard Slade (mystery/thriller): In the play, a fading movie star's husband is murdered by an obsessed fan. Because this action is in the first scene of this five-scene, two-act play, it is obvious that the murder is just the beginning of the story.

Dracula (horror): Closely following the plot of the novel, the play chronicles Count Dracula's journey to England, his stalking of two young women, and his pursuit and eventual defeat by the heroines' suitors and their associates.

The Best Man- Gore Vidal (drama): The play details the seamy political maneuverings behind the nomination of a presidential candidate.

The Children’s Hour- Lillian Helman (drama): A troublemaking student at a girls' school accuses two teachers of having an inappropriate relationship.

A Delicate Balance- Edward Albee (drama): A well-to-do Connecticut family is upended when the grown daughter's godparents, seized by a nameless terror, decide they've come to live with them.

The Marvelous Wonderettes (musical/review): The Marvelous Wonderettes takes you to the 1958 SpringfieldHigh School prom where we meet the Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts! As we learn about their lives and loves, we are treated to the girls performing such classic ‘50s and ‘60s songs as “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Lipstick On Your Collar,” “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” “It’s My Party” and over 20 other classic hits!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Who is on the Artistic Advisory Committee?

The A.A.C. is made up of John Battalino (Board member), Elaine Fournier (Former Board Member), Kerry DiMaggio (Academy of Creative Theatre Coordinator), Gina Kirk (Board Member), and Kevin Harris (Managing Artistic Director.)

How are plays/directors selected?

The A.A.C. considers many factors when choosing the plays/directors for the    Season. The suggested plays represent an appropriate mix of styles and genres          that the Little Theatre strives to offer to our patrons in every Season. The major considerations of the Committee often are:

  •  Experience of the Director
  • Appropriateness of production for the organization and space
  • Thoroughness of Directing Application (is the Director’s vision clear and in line with the overall goals of the Little Theatre.)
  • Cast Breakdown (can the show be cast given the local talent available? Does the play offer roles to men/women/children/age groups that balance the other plays being considered?)
  • Cost of production.
  • Marketability of production.
  • Staff/Volunteer resources necessary to produce the proposed title.

How should I prepare for the interview?

During your director interview, be prepared to go into detail about your vision for the production. You should be able to answer the following questions:

  • How will your production work in the theatre space?
  • Why do you believe this production would appeal to our patrons/community at large?
  • Why do you want to direct this play?
  • What is your approach to Directing? (How do you plan on breaking down the rehearsal process? How do you stage a play? How do you plan on collaborating with your Artistic Team?)

Remember: there are no right or wrong answers to these questions. Every director/production is different. However, you should certainly put some thought into how you will approach the “nuts and bolts” of directing. As always, please feel free to contact Kevin Harris is you have any questions about preparing for the interview.

Interviews will last 15-30 minutes. Feel free to bring in any visual aids (photos,   paintings, drawings) or music that will help you communicate your vision to the Committee.
